The libraries of the OCPLC provide computers for public use, an
online catalog, online databases, printing, as well as specialized
resources such as computer classes and geneaology databases. The
following is a listing of resources provided by the individual libraries:
- Destin Library:
Destin Library has 24 public access workstations on high speed
internet, as well as three computers for children’s use.
The computer lab has room for nine students and an instructor,
and we offer regularly scheduled classes free to library cardholders.
This lab hosts guest instructors with programs of special interest,
such as how to do genealogy research.
- Fort Walton Beach Library:
The Fort Walton Beach Library has 16 Internet computers for public
use. Internet computer time is limited to one hour per day because
of heavy demand. The library provides a “Word Processing
Only” computer for long-term use for typing resumes and
research papers.
The library provides access to a wide variety of children’s
educational programs on computers in the Children’s Department.
Children under 16 are required be accompanied by a parent or have
a permission slip on file signed by a parent or guardian in order
to access the Internet.
- Mary Esther Library:
- The Mary Esther Public Library has 11 computers for public use; 1 is designated as children’s use only.
- There are 2 card catalog stations; 1 is in the children’s area.
- Children under 16 are required to have a parental permission slip on file.
- Computer time is limited to 2 hours per day; 30 minutes if others are waiting. Exceptions are granted for those doing a school project, employment application, etc. Please see a staff member for additional time.
- A black and white printer is available for public use. The cost is 15c per page; the first 2 pages are free.
- Niceville Library:
- In Youth Services -
- 4 Easy computers with interactive games for the younger children;
- 4 Juvenile computers for the older children with Internet access that have Cyber Sitter as a filter; and
- 1 card catalog in the Juvenile area;
- In The Teen Space -
- 8 computers;
- In the Public area -
- 4 card catalog stations at the kiosk near the front entrance of the library;
- 16 public access computers in front of the Circulation Desk;
- 6 public access computers in the kiosks;
- 1 computer in each of our 2 Quiet Study rooms;
- 1 computer in our Business Area, designated for business use only;
All public access computers, with the exception of those in Youth Services, have the Cox high speed internet connection;
Access to email, chat, research, homework, games, & Microsoft Office Professional which includes PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher, Word, and Access;
Basic and intermediate computer classes for the public are taught by library staff as needed;
Staff is available to offer limited assistance to patrons with the computers;
Patrons have a limit of 1 hour for the public access computers when others are waiting;
A picture id is required for signing on to the computers;
Personal laptops may be used in the library, and wireless connectivity is usually available;
Internet Use permission forms signed by a parent/guardian is required for young people under age 16;
Printing Policy: black & white - $.10 per page; color - $.25 per page. All printing must be paid for at the Circulation desk before the pages are printed; no free pages are allowed.
- Robert L. F. Sikes Library (Crestview):
The Sikes Library offers access to 16 computers. Each patron is
permitted one hour per day, but additional time may be granted
upon request. Children under 18 are required to have an Internet
permission slip on file.
The staff holds classes on the cooperative’s research databases
on the third Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. Call to check availability.
- Valparaiso Public Library:
The Valparaiso Community has 15 high speed internet computers that are available to the public. Each computer can be reserved for one hour intervals. If all of the computers are in use, patrons can reserve the next one available. A library card is required to use a computer and parents of minor children must sign for their child’s card. Library staff is available to provide limited assistance to patrons with the computers. A computer class is offered on Thursday mornings and a reservation must be made before attending. The library has 6 computers that are designated for pre-teen and teen usage and 7 computers that are for adults.
The Genealogy and Historical Library has 2 computers with important genealogy search engines installed along with hundreds of national and international genealogy research sites.
All printing must be completed in the computer’s one hour time limit, and black & white copies can be picked-up and paid for at the checkout desk within that hour. Prints are $.10 each.
